“Increasing Participation of Women in Private Capital in Latin America” will explore leadership’s role in attracting and retaining female talent, discuss practical systems and processes that support women in the workplace, and provide context in terms of industry best practices and LP expectations. The session is hosted by LAVCA in collaboration with GPCA and is exclusively open to practitioners investing in Latin America.
Session 1: First-Hand Insights from Industry Veterans
Presentation and discussion - 30 minutes
In this session, facultywill discuss why gender diversity is important froma practical and performance perspective, what has and hasn’t changed for women in the industry, and what role female representation plays in the private capital field. The presentation will highlight how gender-related standards are evolving and what goals modern firms should strive for in terms of policies,approaches, and resulting representation.
Kate Mitchell, Partner, Scale Venture Partners
Kate is a co-founder of Scale, a Silicon Valley-based firm that invests in early-stage enterprise software startups building Cognitive Applications. She and the Scale team have backed successful, high growth companies including Hubspot (NYSE: HUBS); DocuSign (NASDAQ: DOCU), and Bill.com (NYSE: BILL).
Kate is past chairman and board member of the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) and is active in policy matters that impact entrepreneurship, innovation, and inclusion. She co-authored the IPO section of the 2012 JOBS Act which increased access to the public markets for emerging growth companies. In 2014, Kate co-founded an NVCA initiative, VentureForward, which focuses on advancing opportunities for women and underrepresented minorities in the venture ecosystem. She received the NVCA Outstanding Service Award in 2013 for her policy work in Washington and was awarded the Private Equity Trailblazer Award at the 2018 Women in Private Equity Summit. In 2021, Kate was honored with the NVCA’s American Spirit Award for her service to the community centered around equity and diversity.
Kate currently serves on the boards of SVB Financial Group (NASDAQ:SIVB), Fortive Corporation (NYSE:FTV); Silicon Valley Community Foundation, NVCA’s Venture Forward, PEWIN (Private Equity Women Investor Network) where she is also the Co-CEO, Tuck Center for PE & Venture Capital at Dartmouth, and Meals on Wheels San Francisco. She is an advisor and speaker at the Rock Center for Corporate Governance (Stanford Law School). Kate is also an active Kauffman Fellows Mentor.
Alisa A. Wood (New York) joined KKR in 2003 and is a Partner of the Firm. She leads the Private Market Strategies Group globally within KKR’s Client and Partner Group, looking after key product areas including private equity, infrastructure, energy real assets, impact, growth equity and customized products. Ms. Wood chairs the Firm's Mixed Business Approval Group and is a member of a number of the Firm's management committees. She has been actively involved in the Firm's global capital formation and business development activities, including the creation of new strategies, new products and strategic initiatives across the KKR platform. She also previously sat on the Firm's Inclusion and Diversity Advisory Committee for a number of years. Prior to joining KKR, Ms. Wood was with Deutsche Bank's Private Equity Group. She holds a B.A. from Columbia College and an M.B.A from Columbia Graduate School of Business. Ms. Wood currently sits on the Columbia Business School Private Equity Board, the Columbia College Board of Visitors, the Convent of the Sacred Heart Board of Trustees, the Sloane Hospital for Women's Advisory Committee, the PE-WIN's (Private Equity Women Investor Network) Steering Committee, the Public Theater Board of Trustees and the Nantucket Historical Association Board of Trustees. She was named by the Wall Street Journal as one of the "Women to Watch" in 2020.

Session 2: Leadership's Role in Attracting and Retaining Female Talent
Presentation and discussion - 90 minutes
In this practitioner-led discussion, faculty will address how GP leadership can support the design and implementation of policies that create and maintain a gender-diverse and female-friendly company culture. Presentations will discuss where to find female talent, which approaches attract gender-diverse hires, andhow to collaboratively create and institute policies that encourage representation, retention, and internal ascension of women.
Mauricio Salgar joined Advent in 2012 in the firm’s Bogotá office. Prior to joining Advent, he was a Vice President and member of the executive committee at Sanford, a privately held investment firm. Prior to Sanford, Mauricio was COO of Ecopetrol, the Colombian national oil company, where he was responsible for its exploration, production, refining, supply and marketing organizations and shared services units. He also served as Ecopetrol’s interim CEO for a period of time. Before Ecopetrol, Mauricio co-founded despegar.com, an online travel agency, and was an associate at Booz & Co., where he advised clients that included the largest water utility in Colombia, the largest tin mine in Peru and the largest construction company in Colombia.

Session 3: Overcoming Unconscious Bias at the Organizational Level
Presentation and discussion - 60 minutes
This session will discuss how ingrained gender assumptions impact the private equity field, and will highlight how to be conscious of these forces and organizationally overcome them. Faculty will provide important tips on where implicit biases might unexpectedly arise, what outcomes they can affect if left unaddressed, and how to create policies that actively circumnavigate or confront them.

Andrea de la Piedra is the CEO and Co-founder of Aequales, a firm focused on closing gender gaps in the work environment in Latin America through research, consulting, and technology. Andrea is an international speaker, gender specialist and entrepreneur. She has been selected as one of the 101 people, ideas and things changing how we work today by the BBC (2019) and in the list of “Most Creative People” by Fast Company magazine (2020).
Andrea graduated with a Bachelor in Journalism and holds a certificate in Gender Studies from Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru. She is also a graduate of the Competitive Leadership program at Georgetown University and from the Entrepreneurship and Competitiveness in Latin America Program at the University of Columbia Business School. Andrea is a TedxLima and TedxWomen Speaker.
